I truly love my clients, so I thought this would be a very important blog post. DON’T PICK YOUR OWN PIMPLES! I can’t tell you how often I have to say this to my clients. I can spot a picked-at pimple from a mile away. You know what I’m talking about….that crusty, sometimes yellowish scab sitting on your cheek waiting for the world to see it, and virtually impossible to cover up.
Whenever you pick a pimple, you create trauma to your skin which depending on your skin type, can create many issues – from hyperpigmentation, inflammation, irritation and even scars. Picking your pimples can spread bacteria and pus from the infected pore to the surrounding area and also further push the bacteria under your skin creating an infection. This may take it longer to heal.
Comedones are caused when oil glands (sebaceous glands) attached to the hair follicle get clogged with dead skin cells, bacteria, dirt and sweat. These can include blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. Black heads are open pores while whiteheads are closed.
Why should a clinical aesthetician pop your pimple and not you? We are trained to do it. There is some skill needed to do it properly. Before we start, we protect our hands and your face by wearing sterile gloves, use a completely sterilized extraction tool if needed, apply the appropriate amount of pressure and lay off if it’s not working. The skin also needs to be properly prepped by using steam, and exfoliation. We then follow the extraction with a disinfectant and a high-frequency application to rid any bacteria of the area. I bet you’re not doing that at home!
Also remember that not all aestheticians are created equal. Some of us have taken many classes and been properly trained to deal with all kinds of skin conditions.
